Characteristics
Application

Sodium cyanide is the sodium salt of hydrocyanic acid.

Colorless hygroscopic crystals, readily soluble in water (32.4% at 10 ° C, 45.0% at 35 ° C).

It crystallizes in the form of NaCN • 2H2O, above 34.7 ° C - in anhydrous form.

Synonyms
Sodium cyanide, sodium cyanide, NaCN

Application

- Used in the preparation of cyanide baths intended for galvanizing and gilding metal products.

Cyanide baths are the most highly toxic. Also, the composition includes sodium hydroxide and zinc oxide, changing the content of which, you can give different properties to the electrolyte.

The advantages of cyanide baths are high productivity, good hiding power, which allows processing parts with complex shapes, durability and ease of maintenance.

The disadvantages include high pollution with environmental waste and hydrogen fragility, which is the most noticeable disadvantage of cyanide baths.

Hydrogen brittleness significantly reduces the fatigue strength of some steel grades and therefore it is not recommended to galvanize fastener parts with a size less than 0.5 mm using this method.

- Also used in cyanide gold mining.

Used with this product:

- Calcium hypochlorite

- Caustic soda

- Thiourea (thiocarbamide)

- Xanthogenates
