Application

Furfural (C4 H3 OSNO) is a viscous, colorless liquid with a pleasant aromatic odor;

when exposed to air, it turns out to be dark brown or black. It boils at a temperature of about 160 ° C.

Usually used as a solvent, soluble in ethanol and ether.

Furfural is obtained by hydrolysis of plant materials, for example, corn cobs, rice bran, and other types of pentosan-containing raw materials.

Application

• in the production of pesticides;

• in the production of furan resin;

• as a solvent in petrochemical processing to extract dienes (which are used to make synthetic rubber) from other hydrocarbons;

• as a chemical intermediate in the production of furan and tetrahydrofuran solvents;

• to obtain solid resins by reaction with phenol and acetone, or with urea. Such resins are used in the manufacture of fiberglass,

some aircraft parts, and automobile brakes.
